The Art Room
The Art Room

Located at 105 South White Street in Historic downtown Wake Forest NC.

Offering a variety of classes for students in grades K-8th grade.

Our theme-based classes teach students about concepts artists use to both create and invent artistic ideas. Topics include:

• Artists
• Art History
• Composition
• Perspective
• Design
• Science
• Architecture
• Engineering

Each class introduces students to an Artwork and its Artist, a style of Artwork, or a creative concept. Students also learn about:

• Symbolism in a painting,
• Ideas the artist communicates
• Why a particular piece of creativity is important in the world of art?

In the first half of class, students create a painting or drawing designed to enable them to feel a sense of accomplishment in having been productive while creating something unique. The second half of class encourages students to explore and invent through the freedom of play while working with each other on a variety of activities, such as:

• Build with materials in the recycling center,
• Play games,
• Write stories or draw pictures on the dry erase boards,
• Use the sewing machines,
• Create with modeling clay,
• Experiment with science on the marble run,
• Create towers out of a variety of blocks.

Classes include a broad range of ages – providing older kids an opportunity to become inspired by the fresh ideas of younger students and younger students the confidence gained by the encouraging words from respected older classmates. “When you see me in the hallway, will you give me a high five” a 5 year old asked a 5th grader. The 5th grader smiled and said, “Sure I will.”

Emily St.Clair-Lee
Owner, Art Room for Kids

The Art Room first opened at Eight William Street in Clinton, New York to provide kids an opportunity for learning more about art while experimenting with drawing and design principles in an organized, small class setting.

At the Art Room for Kids, class objectives are two-fold:

• Be well organized and directed in the drawing/painting lesson
• Allow students a free form experimentation, as in our “3-D” projects discussed below

The goal of every class is for students to leave with a positive experience as well as something tangible they created and that reflects what they learned.

Classes also encourage kids to experiment using a variety of materials - from cardboard tubes and plastic bottles to artist quality paints, fabrics, sequins, markers, papers and more. The creative options for exploring ideas are large and designed for kids to be able to bring home a piece of art they take pride in. Having a variety of material options available, as well as guidelines for creating art using these materials, helps students feel free about expressing their creativity.

The first half of class begins with a simple warm-up activity before moving toward talking more about the history behind the Artwork chosen as our subject. The first half also includes students drawing and/or painting on their own in relation to the Artwork and ends with a lunch break.

The second half of class encourages students to create an Artwork in “3-D” based on the drawing/painting chosen for the class subject. Fabric, wire, wood, cardboard, modeling clay ... glue guns, sewing machines, screws, tape, etc. are available for student use to facilitate creating their own Artwork.

The Business of the Art Room is run by Emily J. St. Clair-Lee.
